With the fast paced spread of freelance culture and emergence of startups around London’s Silicon Roundabout over the past few years, we are spoiled for choice when it comes to free work space around East London. We’ve identified five go-tos for their atmosphere, coffee and convenience.

There are three branches of Timberyard in London. Our favourite is the one nearest Silicon Roundabout in Old Street. Spread over two floors, this light filled space boasts minimalist mismatched Scandi style furniture, top speed wi-fi and delicious food and coffee.  Timberyard also harbours a great entrepreneurial culture, supporting art exhibitions and hosting great events for startups and freelancers in the evenings. All three branches have great meeting rooms and event spaces which may be booked in advance.

While cafes and hotel lounges are the only “free” work spaces to avail of if not renting an actual work space (apart from the library of course!) and spending money on food and drink is part of the course, we all know that awkward feeling at around 4pm when the waiter comes to tidy up your table (again) and you really don’t feel like a 5th cup of coffee… or anything else for that matter but you do want to do another 2 hours work. Enter Ziferblat, where you pay for your time, not your coffee (or biscuits or fruit for that matter!). On entering, you are handed a clock and when you “clock out” you are billed for your time at the rate of £1.80 per hour. This innovative Russian model was brought to Old Street in 2014. Heralded as “a tree house for adults where we encourage you to create, collaborate and play,” Ziferblat is more than just a workspace, it is a creative social experiment in which participators are urged to create, learn or play the piano (yes there is one). We love the concept as it takes the pressure off our rate of caffeine consumption and the place promotes an interactive creative atmosphere.

The artfully partitioned sprawling lobby at the uber cool Ace Hotel in Shoreditch is a 24 hour hub of entrepreneurial activity. Serving Square Mile Coffee throughout the day, the Bulldog Edition Café will keep you finely caffeinated while the bartenders behind the Gallery Bar can ruster up a concoction to help you wind down in style at the end of a hard day’s work. Oh, and did we mention how cool this place is? You will feel cool just by being here!

Google’s Campus Cafe at Bonhill Street is a buzzing basement of entrepreneurial activity.  This year’s renovation has installed the space with more comfortable seating and it is a great place to get things done or network.  Just by going there you will also stay in the loop with Google Campus’ wonderful schedule of informative events and talks.  The food and coffee is also very good and on Fridays they sometimes have barbecues in the courtyard.  Oh, did we mention there’s a courtyard? Great in the warmer months if you want to unplug and take your work outside…
