As Austria’s capital and largest city, Vienna is perfectly positioned to climb the ranks to become a major tech city. With many of the right attributes to foster a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship, Vienna is quickly making a name for itself on the tech scene. And if that wasn’t enough the Mercer’s Quality of Living survey has just ranked Vienna the most liveable city in the world.

Traditionally a corporate hub, Vienna has utilised its past to promote and invest in innovative startups and entrepreneurs, forcing itself forward as an emerging tech hub, and in a city which boasts over 190,000 students from across 20 different universities, Vienna has a wide talent pool to draw from. Consequently, Vienna is home to a number of cool and exciting startups and this week we are looking at Runtastic.

Runtastic, is the ideal health and fitness partner, offering a number of health and fitness tracking products and apps, covering everything from running, how to get a six pack and even how to sleep better.

Through the mobile apps, users are able to track their fitness activities and monitor their progress to reach their personal goals. Through the app, data is collected such as speed, heart rate and calorie consumption, offering users an detailed insight into their workout, there is even an option whereby users can upload this data directly onto the Runtastic website adding to its social community of fitness users.

By combining sports and technology, Runtastic aims to make sport more fun. Through shared activities, competitions and incentives within the fitness community, users can work on their motivation to get them closer to reaching their goals. So whether you’re a beginner or pro, Runtastic aims to make sport fun, manageable and simple, and with a high quality user interface and easy to use design, it is no surprise its apps frequently rank highly in the app store and user reviews. Consequently, Runtastic has had over 180 million downloads and with 90 millions registered users and the recent acquisition by Adidas for $240 million, Runtastic shows no sign of slowing down.

Runtastic is a great example of the tech startup talent coming out of Austria, since being founded only six years ago with four employers, it now has over 175 staff positioned across four global offices. We expect exciting things from Runtastic and we can’t wait to see what’s next for the startup!
